Manchester Hazard Bio

Manchester Hazard began playing together at the Unitarian Universalist Church in St Clairsville in 1996. The band, then comprised of Walt Warren, Orland Carra and Bill Randolph, began playing hymns at the church Sunday Services and then decided to get together to play some of their favorite "oldies". After rehearsing for a short time, they decided to take their act on the road. Their first coffee house experience was at a small restaurant in Wheeling run by Tammi Simmons called the Farmstead Tea Room at the corner of 22nd & Market Street where they played on Friday nights.

Later Bill moved to California and David Miles took his place playing Bass. David played with the band for several years until about 2006 when his family moved to Pittsburgh. At about the same time Bill returned to the Ohio Valley and now the Original group is back together.

The band's unusual name was originated by Walt Warren While driving thru Kentucky to visit friends he noticed a sign at an exit on I-75 for two towns in that state Manchester and Hazard, Kentucky. He said it would make a good name for a band and when the time came, Manchester Hazard was born. As time went on they began playing at private parties, benefit concerts, at other local churches and even played Wheeling's Waterfront Wednesday series.

Over the years they have added to their impressive play list. Their repertoire includes Irish and Celtic tunes, 60's favorites such as the Beatles, Eagles, CSN&Y, John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens and others, several songs from the 40's and an occasional original by song writers Orland Carra and Walt Warren.

Manchester Hazard continues to wow audiences with their folksy sound and has recently played for the 1st Presbyterian Church in Wheeling, Artworks around town's third Friday Coffee House, and at Trotter Shakes Tuesday evening concert. The band's strong harmony lines and clean acoustic arrangements make them a relaxing and enjoyable musical experience anywhere.

Orland Carra started playing guitar at the age of 14 influenced by his grandmother who played piano and wrote songs, and two uncles who gave him his first guitar and showed him a few chords. From there Orland progressed learning more chords, playing in a high school rock band and later a band of his own in Baltimore, Md.

After years of down time he emerged again writing songs and performing with a band called 'Manchester Hazard' which he currently performs with in his local area of Wheeling, West Virginia.

He has completed about 30 songs to date and 3 CD's the lastest of which, Decibel, contains 10 of his originals. He currently peforms regulary at 'Down on Main Street' - an open mic session and at the Artworks around town's (Art Gallery) coffee house, and several other local venues. He works with other local musicians to produce CD's which are recorded by well known banjo player ED Mahonen at his home studio. Orland writes music from his inner spirit which moves people to feel better about themselves and life in general. He celebrates the sound of harmony and clear and simple melodies with guitar accompaniment.
